A simple 7 ingredient smoothie with powerful antioxidants designed to kick-start an awesome day.
Makes 2.5 cups
Ingredients:
1 cup frozen blueberries (preferably wild blueberries)
1/2 cup frozen, pitted cherries
1 ripe frozen banana (cut into chunks before freezing; if unavailable, just add a regular unfrozen banana)
Handful of spinach
1 tbsp almond butter
1 tbsp ground flaxseeds (ground flaxseeds have a better chance of getting absorbed by your body versus whole ones)
1.5 cups of water (2 cups for thinner consistency)
Optional: handful of whole oats*
Directions:
Blend and enjoy!
*Especially if this smoothie makes up your entire breakfast. I'm not one to normally drink my meals, but when I add oats, this smoothie easily staves off my hunger for a few hours.
This recipe is from Dr. Greger’s, How Not To Die Cookbook, and it’s become my favorite smoothie of all time. I've shared it with friends and love seeing their wide-eyed reactions and "this is amazing!" statements :o)
Beautiful color and phytonutrient-packed power, packaged in a refreshing beverage: what better way to start your day or get a midday boost.
Did you know that berries are the healthiest fruit?
Wild blueberries can also have double the antioxidant power of regular blueberries. #GoWild
Berries have the potential to provide these benefits (How Not To Die, Dr. Michael Greger, pg. 288):
Potential protection against cancer
A boost to the immune system
A guard for the liver and brain
"An American Cancer Society study of nearly one hundred thousand men and women found that those who ate the most berries appeared significantly less likely to die of cardiovascular disease...berries are the healthiest fruits..."
Greens For Kids
I altered this recipe slightly by adding spinach, providing an easy way to get more greens into my system. And lately it’s the only effective way to deliver greens into my little daughter, who's going through a phase of not wanting to eat any “leaves.”
Major bonus: this smoothie instantly boosts her mood from cranky to happy. #preservingmysanity
